The sea has served as artistic inspiration for centuries, from depictions of mythical sea creatures to seascapes capturing the tranquility of the waves. While gaining an introduction to a variety of mediums, children age 6 - 9 will be inspired by our local environment and the treasures one can find along its shores. Through collage, clay, found object sculpture, printmaking and 2D mediums, each week will bring about new inspiration and lessons from the sea while allowing creative expression to flow. Each participant will be encouraged to explore and push their creative boundaries while gaining respect for the beauty of the ocean.
Alexi Sarah Widoff is a ceramicist, illustrator, and herbalist finding inspiration from Rhode Island, the sea, and the treasures that can be collected along the shorelines. Finding humor in the mundane, Alexi Sarah incorporates fleeting experiences - whether they be fallen foliage for printing, or an exotic snack to be illustrated - into her work to capture memories that otherwise may be forgotten. Receiving her BFA from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 2013, Alexi Sarah concentrated in site-specific installation art, which is often what she is thinking about while walking the beach looking for the perfect shell, rock and driftwood combinations. A selection of Alexi Sarah’s work is available at local galleries, herbal shops, and restaurants in the greater Rhode Island area. Alexi Sarah loves watching the children explore their creativity and push boundaries with their ideas in the classroom.
