Weaving Together

January 8 - March 13, 2021

An exhibit entwining four organizations supporting artists with disabilities:

Artists' Exchange

Flying Shuttles

Looking Upwards

Outsider Collective

Dawn Mallozzi, Quite Frankly, weaving with paper, 13 x 9 in.

The Weaving Together exhibition joins four organizations supporting artists with disabilities: Artists’ Exchange, Flying Shuttles, Looking Upwards, and Outsider Collective. We use fabric, yarn, paper, branches, and more to create pieces expressing the importance of working together, intertwining ideas and methods of creating.

The exhibit includes outdoor installations, including life-size looms and murals using yarn and twine, to encourage the community to work as a collective to create something all-inclusive that is unique and inspiring.

Weaving, by definition, is the craft or action of forming fabric by interlacing threads. To our four organizations, it means so much more. We have all brainstormed the various ways to incorporate the idea of weaving into this body of work, whether it be layering complementary colors, connecting paper chains to create abstract forms, or spiraling branches to represent the natural world.

We look forward to seeing how this exhibit expands, transforms and continues to entwine through the cold winter. We hope that the various pieces woven together bring warmth to all during this dark time.

In addition to viewing the art, you're invited to collaborate on outdoor installations throughout the exhibition to create something together as a community on the mural wall, located on Douglas Street behind the JAC.
