Artist Statement:

As winter begins, I wanted to paint an image that is vibrant and expands out into the environment. A beacon of light during the darkest days of the year. The image in the mural is based on a recent smaller painting—one of a series of overlapping, figural forms in an implied landscape environment. I began making drawings and paintings with this motif beginning in last Winter’s quarantine. During these times of increased isolation and social distancing, the image represents a collective desire: to embrace one another unequivocally and unconditionally. A sign of hope and a reminder of what is to return.

Murals are powered by the Sun.

I think of how the Sun’s light reflects off its surface,

off a puddle, a car door, and so on.

Some of that light reaches eyes.

How far does the light travel?

Artists Biography:

Sun Quest is a painter based in Newport, RI. Born in Cumberland and educated at Rhode Island College in Providence, he has been living and working in Newport since the Spring of 2020. Working closely with The King’s Lens (Patrick Murphy) Sun Quest has expanded their practice to include mural-painting, sign-painting, installation, and performance. Tying all these forms together is the belief that paint is a magical substance that endows objects with supernatural power. Painting is more than image-making, it is an organization of light energy that has real effects on the environment, locally and beyond.
