Opening Reception will include a performance at 7:00 pm with music by Storm of New Urban Arts and AS220 Youth’s Zukrewe hip hop performance troupe!

School’s Out continues Jamestown Arts Center’s tradition of hosting a Community Outreach Exhibition each January. In 2018 we have invited five regional, award-winning, after-school art programs to exhibit work created by their participants. We are excited to welcome: AS220, CityArts, FabNewport, New Urban Arts, and Riverzedge Arts. This invitational show asks each organization to choose artwork from their own community programs that highlight the extraordinary work that is created but, seldom seen outside their own venues. A percentage of the proceeds of artwork sold benefits these five organizations.
AS220 Youth is dedicated to dismantling the pipeline to prison by empowering beyond-risk and incarcerated youth through arts, culture and collective action. Our mission is to raise a community of young leaders who use their experience, influence and creativity to build an alternative future for themselves and their communities.
Serving young people ages 14-21, with a special focus on those in the care and custody of the state, we provide programming in 3 primary locations; UCAP Middle School, our Empire Street Studio and the Training School, Rhode Island’s juvenile detention facility. Once youth are released from Training School or leave UCAP, they are invited to continue working with us at our Empire Street Studio up until age 21.
The mission of Providence ¡CityArts! for Youth Inc. is to provide free professional art-based education and training to Providence youth in a fully developed community-based arts center that reflects, encourages, and promotes the rich ethnic diversity of Providence, our capital city. CityArts’ mission is to ensure all youth access to quality arts programs—unhindered by socio-economic barriers, and celebrating the arts as a means to youth empowerment, community building, and social change.
A fab lab is a small-scale community workshop where lab members use powerful technology and materials to make (almost) anything. The concept started at MIT and there are over 150 labs worldwide.
FabNewport provides Newport County residents with alternative pathways to science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) through mentoring and personalized education. We offer: Classes and workshops for students during the school day, after school programs for middle & high school students, evening workshops for older students & adults, and facility rentals for local companies and entrepreneurs.
Founded in 1997, New Urban Arts is a nationally-recognized community arts studio for high school students and emerging artists in Providence, Rhode Island. Our mission is to build a vital community that empowers young people as artists and leaders to develop a creative practice they can sustain throughout their lives.
Our free, year-round out-of-school programs promote sustained mentoring relationships between urban high school students and trained artist mentors—who, together, engage in youth leadership, risk taking, collaboration, and self-directed learning. We are grounded in the belief that in order to fulfill the promise of our democracy, all young people, no matter their place in society, should have the opportunity to become more creative and independent thinkers.
At first, this mission meant changing the lives of a small number of Woonsocket teens by teaching them art and design skills in a safe and nurturing environment. Later, it meant changing the lives of dozens of teens by employing them in our art- and design-based micro-enterprise studios. In 2009, our Mobile Studio brought the Riverzedge Arts experience to hundreds of K-12 students across the state of Rhode Island.
The core concept behind our youth development work is that by bringing underserved, under-resourced youth into a professional, high-expectations environment that modeled a lifestyle of creative expression, disciplined practice and self-reliance, they could envision themselves leading this lifestyle and discover pathways to reach it. We helped them see that these pathways would necessarily require high school graduation and almost always college. And then we gave them the tools and, more importantly, the support, to make it happen.
Our youth development programs focus on building the full range of 21st century skills encompassed in the acronym STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, math). These same subjects might lack appeal in the classroom, but at Riverzedge Arts, they become the tools that let our youth express their creativity and design their own futures.
