NOTES ON NATIVE PLANTS with Tanya Kelley

Native plants are plants that grow naturally in the region in which they evolved. Without them and the insects that co-evolved with them, local birds cannot survive. Planting native plants helps to restore habitat which is vital to preserving biodiversity. If every person with a yard incorporated at least a third to half native plant species in their gardens then collectively we could increase habitat areas which would nurture and sustain birds and animals, and beneficial insects.

Tanya will talk about three native plant gardens she has worked on, two gardens at The Norman Bird Sanctuary and two residential gardens which incorporate natives and non- natives.

Tanya Kelley, founder and Principal of PLACEstudio, LLC Landscape Design in Newport, RI received a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from the City College of the City of New York as well as a Masters in Landscape Architecture from The Rhode Island School of Design. Tanya is a commissioner for the Rhode Island Preservation and Heritage Commission where she dedicates herself to landscape preservation policy.

Tanya completed two gardens for the Norman Bird sanctuary which showcase Rhode Island and New England native plants and their benefits to wildlife, and is currently working on two private native plant gardens for installation this Spring.
