The ud is a Middle Eastern and Turkish 11-string instrument that archeologists claim dates as far back as 500BC. It is considered to be the ancestor of the guitar, and was later brought to Europe where it played an important role in the development of Baroque music. In India, the combination of the ud and rudra veena birthed the Indian sitar. Its sound is very profound, marked by a natural reverb and warm tonal quality.
