ABOUT THE EVENT

Be part of the conversation. “Material Matters encourages viewers to question whether what they see is appropriation, appreciation, or something else entirely,” explains curator Ari Montford. Join the curator and exhibiting artists in an open forum that invites participation and dialogue.

"Through this lens, we explore how materiality shapes perceptions, and how artists assert their agency by reinterpreting cultural symbols. In this interconnected, intersectional space, art becomes a tool for change."

ABOUT THE EXHIBTION:

Material Matters is a multimedia exhibition featuring nationally recognized artists Michael Cochan, Lloyd Martin, Suzan Shutan, and Jason Travers. These artists navigate cross-cultural associations and narratives to reference and reshape meaning. Drawing inspiration from sources as varied as ancient Buddhist architecture and the Harlem Renaissance, their creative practices challenge and distort the relationships between form and meaning. The exhibition disrupts perception, inviting viewers into a dialogue that explores a transformative, intersectional experience.
